FAQ

Has a new monastic order been founded within the Church of Sweden?
A first step has been taken, the 6 of June 2014.

What does this mean?
This means that a new step has been taken to explore monasticism of the Church of Sweden. Monasticism in the centre of the city, with ties to the prayers and services of the cathedral and with the possibility for ordained women to join.

Will the order be exclusively for ordained women?
Only time will tell.

Would it be possible for men to join?
The thought of a double monastery is not unfamiliar.

Does the order have a name?
No, not yet.

Is there a use of a habit?
No. The sign of the vows are a ring and a silver cross.

Which vows have been taken?
Celibacy, common ownership and obedience, daily prayer and ministry in the city.

What Rule is used?
In the big traditional convent rules, there is highly valuable guidance but not one of them has been chosen as a foundation for this monasticism. The vow of compliance is made for Christ such as his life is expressed in the gospels. Christ is the rule, the guiding light and the norm for the life we wish to live. The order for the monastery’s rhythm and inner life will be allowed to grow over time. The calling is to live in the presence of God through prayers and services in the city.

Will the stone house “Klostret” at Ryseliusgården be used as a monastery?
The stone house is a historic building and in the current situation it is unclear as to what extend such a building can be used in public, but it would, however, be pleasant if there were a way to make it available for prayers and education. Time will tell. The house has since 2006 been a part of the vision for this monastery.

How many members does the monastery have?
Currently we have one member.

Are there more members on the way?
There are many people who express a wish to have a connection to the “seed” in different ways, some through a daily prayer and others by following and support the growth of the Order through intercession, practical and financial aid.

What is the diocese’s bishop Martin Modéus’ opinion on the fact that a new monastery is established in Linköping?
The bishop is positive about this.

What is the connection between the monastery and the diocese?
The bishop has a supervisory responsibility and a counselling function regarding the growth of the Order. Therése Olsson has informed the board of the diocese about the monastic vocation. The diocese’s legal expert is instrumental to the juridical organisation of the monastery.

Does the monastery receive any economical support from the Church of Sweden?
No.

Is there a need for economical support?
Yes.

What is the connection between the monastery and Linköping Cathedral?
Therése Olsson is a member of the cathedral’s College of Priests and participates in the daily prayer and services of the Cathedral.

Is it possible to visit the monastery?
The possibility to accept visitors is limited the moment.
